  Avonvale Education Support Centre

The Centre was established in 1985 and is a K - 12 school that has a split campus. The primary school classes are located on the grounds of the Avonvale Primary School and the Secondary class is located at Northam SHS. The Centre has its own administration and budget and works in co-operation with the school on the same campus to provide the best educational outcomes for all students.

Students are offered a placement at Avonvale Education Support Centre after being assessed by a School Psychologist or Paediatrician.  All students who attend at the centre have been identified with a cognitive impairment ranging from mild to multi/severe. A diagnosis may include Intellectual Disability, Autism Spectrum Disorder (includes PDD NOS) or Global Development Delay.

To provide a diverse range of students with a diverse range of needs a world class education based on researched models of best practice. In a K - 12 environment we have a responsibility to ensure that our students are equipped as much as they can be to leave school well prepared for their future.

As part of our staff our centre also has Education Assistants who support the teaching  and learning programs at the centre. They work in a part time and full time capacity and are dedicated and highly experienced.

Avonvale ESC has access to a School Psychology Service.  The School Psychology Services assist us through consultation and advice in the areas of disability and ability, behaviour, learning and social/emotional concerns. If you have any concerns about your child and would like to talk to our School Psychologist, please talk to your child's teacher.

The centre will have support from the Therapy Services team Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist and Speech Pathologist at regular intervals as well as requested consultation with parents.  Daily programs are implemented by the classroom Education Assistants.

A School Nurse carries out checks on eyesight, hearing and growth.  Teachers and parents may refer a student to the nurse if necessary.

The school needs to be informed prior to any students who are not being collected by their regular caregiver. Other persons need to complete the “Student/Visitor Sign-In/out file” at reception and possibly provide identification.

If bus transport to and from Kindergarten is something you would like to consider, please contact the school for more information.

The school owns a 15 seat coaster bus and a 25 seat Coach with wheel chair hoist/access, which is used for transporting students during excursions both around the town of Northam and beyond.  Parents will always be advised prior to your student requiring travel in the centre bus whereby your permission will be sought.
